Maintaining Legal Status
It is imperative that exchange visitors know and understand the requirements for maintaining valid J-1 status:
- Maintain the following documents:
- A valid Form DS-2019
- A valid passport
- Form I-94 marked D/S for "duration of status"
- Report to IS within three (3) days after arrival to provide copies of immigration documents and complete program validation.
- Engage only in the activities specified on the Form DS-2019. For the majority of UMMC J-1 exchange visitors, that will involve research.
- Engage only in employment that is authorized under his/her J-1 program or by UMMC's Responsible Officer.
- Purchase and maintain the required health and repatriation/medical evacuation insurance, including coverage for all dependents.
- Report a change of address to IS within 10 days after moving.
- Notify IS of any changes in funding as soon as they occur.
- Refrain from program participation after the expiration date on the Form DS-2019 and prepare to depart the United States within the 30-day grace period.
